Production of Xylitol by Electrical Reduction of Xylose

The cane drosses or corncobs were hydrolytically decomposed to xylose liquid of concentration 50%, which was then electrolytically reduced on the film with current density 5 A/m² and 25~30 V(dc) in Na₂SO₄ solution of pH=7. Over 95% xylose were reduced to xylitol. Yield over 8.6%, purity 98.5%.
