A method to analyze the relationship between the helical structure and optical activity was proposed by the study of the conformations and X-ray structures of some cyclic esters possessing a C₂-symmetry element which were prepared by esterification of L-(+)-2, 3-O-isopropylidene threitol with dicarboxylic dichlorides.
