The development and application of an on-line fast gas chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometer (FGC-QMS) for logging technology were illustrated. The FGC was equipped with a suction pump to extract sample and a ten-way valve based on gas-driving for automatic sampling. The QMS with electron impact ion source and selected ion monitoring was used for detection of hydrocarbons in oil gas with high sensitivity and fast acquisition speed. The instrument could perform continuously cyclic sampling and analysis by a precise sequential controller, thus meeting the requirement for on-line detection. By using nitrogen as carrier gas, the analysis time of C₁-C₅ alkanes was less than 30 s and C₁-C₈ was less than 90 s by the instrument, at the same time, the detection limit was volume fraction 0.0001% and linear range exceeded 5 orders of magnitude, showing that the instrument was appropriate for the fast real-time detection of hydrocarbons of oil gas in well logging process.
