Esterification of Wood Powder

The wood powder treated with a mixture of sulfuric-diethylamine-dimethyl sul-foxide (SO₂-DEA-DMSO) can reach a high esterification degree when it is then esterified with a mixture of pyridine and acetic anhydride in the conditions of high temperature, high quantity of esterification agent and long reaction time. The esterification degree is relatively low if the wood powder is treated with polyformaldehyde-DMSO (PMO-DMSO) due to the decreased activity of hydroxyl groups in cellulose as result of chemical destrustion of ligno-cellulose during solvent treatment.
