We analyzed and extracted the actual archaeological problems, and refined a chemical integrated practical activity around the theme of “analysis and detection of lipid residues absorbed in in archeological sherds”. In this chemical practical activity, students are introduced to the interdisciplinary field of archaeological chemistry. Students crush and extract the lipid residues absorbed in archaeological sherds, transfer the recovered lipids to fatty acid methyl esters, analyze the product by GC, and analyze the usage of pottery based on the archeological background. The laboratory will be used for the students majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, and anthropology, and archaeology. Pedagogically, the techniques currently used in the field of archaeological chemistry are introduced, and the fundamental concepts in sample isolation and preparation, derivatization, gas chromatography, and multicomponent sample analysis are reinforced in this experiment.
