Abstract:
The domestic inorganic chemistry textbooks and the corresponding popular international textbooks are compared in contents. It is found that the inorganic chemistry courses in China include the contents of both the international chemical principles or general chemistry courses and the descriptive inorganic chemistry. Domestic inorganic chemistry textbooks cover a wider range of topics and are concise in text description, but are not easy for self-studying. In international textbooks, the coverage of chemical principle textbooks is usually not wide enough, but the contents are well-illustrated and the readers are progressively lead to the frontier of the subjects, together with the proper use of theory and its applications; some textbooks have wide coverage and the forefront of current subjects are introduced. Those are worthy of mentioning for our reference in the future construction of teaching materials.

Abstract:
General chemistry is a required basic course for the most majors of science and engineering. High-quality teaching materials are required for curriculum construction and talent cultivation. In recent decades, the inorganic and general chemistry teaching and research team at Tongji University has systematically constructed the teaching material of general chemistry textbooks in multiple versions, forms and dimensions, and thus reaching to a new level of General Chemistry (2nd edition). Achievements of system construction of this textbook are mainly reflected in the following aspects:1) the knowledge structure meeting different levels is systematically constructed to meet the need of different talent-cultivation modes, and the knowledge points match the requirements of emerging engineering education are laid out; 2) a teaching material system has been established for adapting to the training goal of high-quality talents with a solid foundation and a broad vision; 3) a dynamic updating mode has been built timely. The textbook embodies the advanced nature, intersections and comprehensiveness of knowledge. Overall, General Chemistry (2nd edition) after the system construction not only conforms to the interdisciplinary characteristics, but also adapts to the requirements of the talent-training for emerging engineering education.

Abstract:
This paper gives a brief comparison of the quantitative chemical analysis content in representative analytical chemistry textbooks by authors at Peking University and overseas. Specifically, the content of introduction, error and data analysis and treatment, as well as chemical equilibria and volumetric titration are evaluated. The compared textbooks cover largely the same basic contents, methods and ways to solve analytical problems. Each book presents the content in its own style, sequence, and point cut, providing diversified perspectives on analytical chemistry. Quantitative Chemical Analysis by authors at Peking University is a concise textbook which elucidates all the basic concepts, principles and methods in limited number of pages. Most overseas textbooks provide a detailed introduction of the basic physical chemistry perspective of chemical equilibria, thus, general chemistry course may not be a prerequisite. The future development of analytical chemistry and related disciplines, as well as the emergence of new analytical methods may become parts of the analytical chemistry textbooks. As a result, the chemical analysis part may be reduced as we cannot make the size of the textbook bigger and bigger without limit. Nevertheless, the procedure and steps to solve problems of analytical chemistry remains the same. In the future analytical chemistry textbooks, the basics and principles in the workflow of the analytical chemistry procedure, and errors and analytical data treatment are suggested to be enhanced. The language/terminology of analytical chemistry and figures of merit of analytical methods are suggested to be introduced. The way to solve complicated chemical equilibria should be further condensed based on the physical chemistry principle. All of the above are the basis for understanding how to solve an analytical chemistry problem, how to develop an analytical method, and how to validate a new analytical method.

The history of the construction of physical chemistry textbooks after the founding of the People's Republic of China was reviewed according to the 40-year experience of the author in building physical chemistry textbooks. It is suggested that we need to understand well the relationship between teaching materials and lectures, and manage properly the relationship between teaching materials and scientific research. Teaching material construction should keep up the pace with the time, and strive to achieve the diversification and three-dimensional construction of teaching materials.

Abstract:
With the emerging trend of high-quality and modern higher education, cultivating higher-order thinking skills among students has become an important strategy for higher education development. Based on our understanding of the connotation of higher-order thinking skills and STS (science, technology, and society) education, this study organized the known conditions in STS exercises using the relationship between physical, quantitative, characteristic, and idle conditions and the cultivation of higher-order thinking skills. Considering the fundamental laws of thermodynamics in physical chemistry as an example, a two-way list of knowledge points combined with STS education was established by integrating teaching objectives, learning situations, and STS exercise planning, which was conducive to higher-order thinking skill cultivation. Considering the type and difficulty of STS exercises, they were designed in the form of selection, adaptation, and self-compilation and practically applied in physical chemistry teaching. These STS exercises promoted the higher-order thinking skills of students via problem solving. Thus, this study provides a novel approach to improve the content and forms of physical chemistry exercises.

Abstract:
Taking chemical potential as the main line, this paper mainly introduces the derivation of various types of chemical reaction isotherms both systematically and completely in physical chemistry textbooks. By doing so, it can further consolidate and strengthen the students' understanding and application of the chemical potentials of different kinds of substances. On the other hand, it can also make clear the origin of various types of chemical reaction isotherms rather directly and be helpful to the students for their correct understanding and calculation of standard molar Gibbs free energy change ΔrGmϴ, standard equilibrium constant Kϴ (also named thermodynamic equilibrium constant) and reaction quotient Q of various types of chemical reactions. Hence, a rather good teaching effectiveness can be achieved hopefully.

Abstract:
Taking the sixth edition of Physical Chemistry of Nanjing University published by Higher Education Press in 2022 as the research object, and drawing on the analytical framework developed by Gkitzia et al., the content analysis method was used to analyze the visual representations in the textbook. Coding statistics and analysis of textbooks are carried out from four dimensions:type of representation, relationship between representation and text, appropriate title and surface feature annotation. The research found that:(1) In terms of representation types, there are symbols, macroscopic, microscopic, and various representations, but there are no multiple or multi-type representations, and the quantity is extremely unbalanced. Amongst, the proportion of symbolic representation (72.85%) is large and exceeds the sum of several other representation forms, while the macro representation (3.31%) and micro representation (5.63%) are significantly less, of which various representations (18.21%) are mainly a combination of "macro-symbol" and "micro-symbol". (2) In terms of representation presentation, the over-all quality is relatively high, specifically, 98.34% of visual representations are completely related and connected to text, 98.34% of visual representations have appropriate titles, and 97.68% of visual representations have clear representation annotations. Based on the research results, possible directions for visual representation improvement in physical chemistry textbooks are explored.
