LiNi_0.5Co_0.4Al_0.1O₂ compositions were synthesized by high temperature solid-state method. The crystal structures and surface morphology of LiNi_0.5Co_0.4Al_0.1O₂ powders were characterized by X-ray diffractometry(XRD), fourier transform infrared spectrometer(FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The electrochemical properties of LiNi_0.5Co_0.4Al_0.1O₂ were examined by charge-discharge tests and cyclic voltammetry. The results showed that thematerial delivered the initial discharge capacity of 159.9 mAh·g^-1 with the voltage range 3~4.5 V and 0.2C rate, and it retained 142.6 mAh·g^-1 discharge capacity after 50 cycles.
